Mixed Media & Pastel Leaves

Students are learning more about warm and cool colors. Looking at leaves from nature they use warm and cool to create a color scheme.

THE PLAN
3 sessions; 45 minutes per session

SWBAT identify warm and cool colors.
SWBAT define the outline of objects.

1. black construction paper
2. glue
3. pencil/eraser
4. paint brush
5. metallic paint
6. pastel (chalk)

1. View images of the fall season with leaves. (15 min)
- discuss what students see (leaves/fall)
- warm/cool colors
- review organic shapes

2. Go outside (10 min)
- break into teams pass out boxes to carry leaves
- give 5 min to pick up various leaves, pine cones, etc.

3. Demo how to draw leaves. (20 min)
- discuss/explain outlines
- draw at least 6 leaves. leaves must touch/overlap

class 2

1. Review warm/cool colors, outlines, organic shapes. (5 min)
2. Review drawing leaves. Demo next step with glue bottles. (30 min)
-Trace the outline of the leaves with glue.
-place on drying rack

class 3

1. Review previous knowledge. (5 min)
2. Demo use warm/cool colors with pastels to fill with color. Demo how to outline the leaves in metallic colors. (10 min)
- warm colors for leaves and cool color background
- spray with hairspray or fixative

Student do a thumbs up (yes) or thumbs down (no) questions when shown different colors. Yes if it is a warm color, No if it is not. You can also have them use their hand to make a W or a C to indicate if it is a warm or cool color.

Try to keep drawings level as possible after using glue and don't let student get overly heavy with glue. The glue fills in and will drop onto the paper below it.
