THE PLAN
4 sessions; 45 minutes per session
How can you create a piece of modern art using geometric shapes and primary colors like the artist Mondrian.
Visual aid materials:
Artwork of Mondian
Pictures of robots
Pictures of Mondrian inspired items from our culture
(examples of Nike sneakers, furniture and clothing found online)
12x18 heavy weight tag
Primary color tempura paint
Flat paint brushes (1/2" )
Black sharpie markers
Pencils
Week One:
View DVD or ppt presentation developed by teacher with emphasis on modernism, realism, abstract art, geometric art, geometric shapes, primary colors, bio and artwork of Mondrian. Have students sketch a robot onto their tag board using only large and simple geometric shapes.
Week Two:
Paint each geometric shape with a different primary color.
Week Three:
Complete painting by outlining with broad line black marker and add expressive facial features (shapes can also be outlined with black tempra).
Week Four:
Review, connections and completion.

Very fun! I never thought to bring his style to a subject matter. What if you made a Mondrian Apartment building, or city map? You've just opened up a world of ideas to me!
