Secondary Monsters

This lesson is used to introduce primary and secondary colors to students. Use with book Monsters Love Colors by Mike Austin.

THE PLAN
3 sessions; 50 minutes per session

SWBAT mix define primary and secondary colors.
SWBAT make secondary colors.
SWBAT identify free-form and geometric shapes.
SWBAT create a pattern.
SWBAT use materials properly.

Tempera
sponge rollers
scissors
glue
construction paper
oil pastel

Day 1:
Teach about primary and secondary colors.
Using tempera mix and make secondary colors.
Paint one 6x9 piece of paper with purple, one with green and one with orange.
Add white to mixed secondary color and have students make a tint. Using a sponge roll the tint on paper.
Day 2:
Create background using primary colors as a border. Practice cutting skills, gluing, and patterns.
Day 3:
Teach about geometric and organic shapes.
Drawing on the back 6x9 painted paper, have students create a shape for their monster.
Cut out and glue on background.
Using oil pastels add details to monsters and to border.
