Migration Series Re-Illustration Collage

Students chose a panel (and related caption) from Jacob Lawrence's "Migration Series." Using wallpaper sample books, students were tasked with re-illustrating the caption using Romare Bearden-inspired collage.

THE PLAN
10+ sessions; 55 minutes per session

AWBAT Re-illustrate a caption from Jacob Lawrence's "Migration Series" using (Romare Bearden inspired) collage on panel.

—Wood Panel (we used 20"x24")
—Wallpaper Sample Books (donated by local interior designer), Construction Paper, Magazines, Newspaper, etc.
—Scissors and/or Xacto Knives
—Glue and/or Rubber Cement

—Introduce Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden, their work, and the "Migration Series"
—Students select a caption from the "Migration Series" (we did it draft style!)
—Students brainstorm words and phrases based on chosen phrase
—Students create at least to thorough concept sketches
—Students select a final concept and loosely transfer to final panel via sketch (to get an idea of size)'
—Students select paper textures and colors that are appropriate for project completion (ongoing)
—Beginning with background, students work to execute their concept through collage

Rubric based on:
Efficiency (use of time/planning)
Craft (neatness/execution)
Guidelines (collage/concept)
