THE PLAN
The student will learn that:
1. Sumi-e painting is a traditional Japanese style of painting using a series of different brushstrokes.

By the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:
1. Use their knowledge of Sumi-e brush techniques to make a painting based on nature.
2. Use these paintings as illustrations for an accordion-style folded book.

Materials: Newsprint paper, watercolor brushes ink or watered down tempera paint, water, buckets, rice paper, and watercolor paper, cardboard for book boards, colored paper.

Students will be introduced to the materials that are used in brush painting. They will view a demonstration on how to properly load the brush with ink. They will view demonstrations of each of the different strokes and will practice them using the newsprint.
-Once they are comfortable with the brushstrokes, the teacher will lead a bamboo painting exercise on good paper. Once students have become comfortable with the bamboo paintings, they can move on to trying other images such as flowers, or animals.

This is great. I do a lesson similar to this, I'll have to share my worksheets with you. But I love how you turned it into a book!

I also do this with my students and I usually do a scroll of red paper, but I love the idea of an accordion fold book! Thank you for that inspiration.
