Deconstructed Collage Portrait

Artists will learn how to draw facial features using value and monochromatic colors. They will then create a 2D mixed media art piece (collage) arranged in a composition to create a deconstructed face.

THE PLAN
4 sessions; 80 minutes per session

1. Colored Construction Paper
2. Colored Pencils
3. Newspaper
4. Black Construction Paper (12 x 18)

1. Practice drawing eyes, nose, mouth and hair in your sketchbook. Refer to the how-to sheets and project sample. Each practice sketch will be shown to the teacher to get credit. You will get 5 points for each facial feature – This is separate from the final project grade.

2. Once you are comfortable with the drawings, get colored paper to start you final drawings. This will be mostly MONOCHROMATIC (one color) so you papers should all be the same color but different shades.

3. Use regular pencil to lightly sketch the details of your facial features. Use colored pencils in the same color family as your paper to color in all of the details, shades and values. You must use a minimum of 3 different colored pencil colors. All the colors should be in the same color family. Think analogous colors or a Light, Medium and Dark of the color you choose.

4. You need to draw and color the following features:
• 2 eyes with eyebrows
• 1 nose
• 1 mouth
• Hair – this can be one large drawing of hair or a few sections.

5. Use newspaper for your head and neck. Draw the shape of the head and cut it out. Then draw the neck and shoulders and cut it out. It should be 2 pieces so you can layer them.

6. Rip your facial features so they have a jagged edge around them.

7. You will Collage (glue down with a glue stick) all of your pieces onto black paper to create a finished composition. Think about placement (eyes are in the middle of the head not at the top)and layering the pieces. They can be angled to create that deconstructed look. You may also add additional papers (all in the same color family) to create details and interest.

8. Once the head, neck and shoulders and facial features are glued down, you will create hair. Hair can be ripped, cut, twisted, etc. Layer different pieces and shades of the color. You can add colored pencil to it to get dimension.

9. Using construction paper add a shirt that has interesting details. Details can be added but using construction paper and/colored pencil.

Students will be graded using the attached Rubric.
