Apple Prints

Students will create apple prints from a real apple in this two day printmaking lesson.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 40 minutes per session

1. SWBAT describe what an apple looks and feels like.

2. SWBAT properly create a stamp print from an apple.

3. SWBAT create a balanced composition using a variety of colors and objct placement.

1. Apples, cut in half
2. Apple story/poem
3. Tempera paint (red yellow and green for apples)
4. White paper for printing on
5. Markers

1. On day one, read your apple story/poem and show students the star in the center of the apple. Discuss what an apple looks like and feels like on the inside and the outside.

2. Continue on day one by demonstrating the stamping process by dipping the apple into paint and pressing it onto the paper. Talk about using a variety of colors and creating a good composition by using the entire piece of paper.

3. On the third day, discuss what details there could be on the apples (stems, leaves, worm, etc.). Have students use markers to draw these details in. (Optional: have students paint the background with watercolor paint or color it with crayons).

You can create a rubric to assess attention to details and composition on the paper. You can also assess if students followed the printing process correctly.

You can expand this lesson to use other fruits when making prints...pears, bananas (with the peel), oranges, etc.
