THE PLAN
1 session; 40 minutes per session
1. SWBAT identify the order of the colors of the rainbow.
2. SWBAT create a collage of a head of Roy.
1. Glue
2. Scissors
3. Markers
4. Skin toned construction paper
5. Pre-cut strips of construction paper in the colors of the rainbow
6. Black construction paper
1. Review the order of the colors of the rainbow with students if you have already introduced it before. Tell students that they will be creating a collage of Roy G. Biv using construction paper, markers and glue.
2. Give everyone the skin toned construction paper. Tell them to draw a head and create Roy's facial features with markers. Have them cut this out and glue it to the black construction paper.
3. Give each student two pieces of each color strip of paper. Tell students to get creative with Roy's hair. They can trim it, curl it or spike it however they think Roy's hair would look.
4. Glue the hair to the top of Roy's head in the order of the rainbow.
Students should be assessed on their understanding of the order of the colors in the rainbow and on their facial featuresplacement. (I have attached my generic rubric that I used to grade this assignment. For "Understanding New Concepts:" I wrote in "Roy. G. Biv."
I did this with 1st grade and they loved it! Depending on your students it may have to stretch into a two day project...I managed to get it done in one day. Encourage your kids to get really creative...none of mine did but it would have been great to see them make a rainbow mustache or beard for Roy too!
Besides my generic rubric, I have also attached the bracelet template that I used the class before to introduce the concept of Roy. G. Biv and the rainbow.

I used this lesson with my first graders and it was a hit! They loved creating the faces and added details to make them original. When I brought out the strips of paper for the hair, they were so excited! As they were leaving the class I could hear them talking about Mr. Roy G. Biv?

This lesson is going great! I split it into two 40 minute class periods. Thanks MrsImpey!
