Early [PK-K] Rubric

Kindergarten Cutting & Gluing Assessment

Created on November 11, 2012 by MrsImpey

I created this assessment to use as part of the new APPR requirements. This is a cutting and gluing assessment that I use with my kindergarteners at the beginning and end of the school year to show growth.

THE PLAN
1 session; 40 minutes per session

1. SWBAT demonstrate their scissor skills at the beginning and end of the year.
2. SWBAT demonstrate their gluing skills at the beginning and end of the year.
3. SWBAT show growth in their cutting and gluing skills by the end of the school year.

1. Shape sheet (attached)
2. Scissors
3. Glue (not glue sticks)
4. Colored construction paper

1. Review scissor safety with students. Tell them that they must cut out all 9 shapes and 2 strips that are on this worksheet, and glue them to the construction paper by the end of the period.

Use the attached rubric to assess students. The rubric assesses students based on:
1. Composition (how well did they space out shapes on the construction paper when they glued them)
2. Cutting (How well do students cut out the shapes...small snips, large snips)
3. Gluing (How much glue do students use and do they use the correct "dot" glue technique?)
4. Timeliness (Did student cut out all of the shapes and glue them within the class period)

***The way this rubric is set up, another teacher should be able to grade your post-assessments at the end of the year without seeing the students create the end product, as per the requirements of the APPR process.

I have given this as my pre-assessment this year and it was interesting to see the results! I had 3 out of 49 kindergartener's that were AMAZING cutters! They were very precise and on the lines, but they only managed to cut and glue 3 shapes out of 11!
