Day of the Dead Skull Masks

Teach students about the Day of the Dead.

THE PLAN
4 sessions; 40 minutes per session

1. SWBAT differentiate between Halloween and Day of the Dead.
2. SWBAT identify characteristics of Mexican folk art.
3. SWBAT design and create a skull mask for Day of the Dead.

1. Paper mache
2. Face forms
3. Tempera paint
4. Examples of Mexican Day of the Dead art
5. Paint brushes
6. Ven Diagaram (optional)

1. Introduce students to Day of the Dead.
2. Have them design a skull mask.
3. (Day 2)Create paper mache mask on face form.
4. Day 3: Paint base color on mask.
5. Day 4: Paint Mexican designs on mask.
6. Optional Day 5: Fill out a ven diagram comparing Day of the Dead to Halloween. Give students age appropriate articles to read for supporting facts.

I did this project as part of a Mexican Art unit. I have also attached the packet we use to take notes. This packet also contains the second project, repousse mirrors and the information learned about that.
