THE PLAN
3 sessions; 60 minutes per session

1. SWBAT identify work by Vincent van Gogh.
2. SWBAT identify different levels of depth in a piece of artwork (foreground, middle ground, background)
3. SWBAT demonstrate an understanding of depth by creating a piece of art using foreground, middle ground, and background.
4. SWBAT deomonstrate an understanding of line and movement by creating a piece of work in the style of Vincent van Gogh.

2. Oil pastels (I get the Crayola classpack)
3. Pencil
4. (for optional mounting) glue

Using Pencil:
1. Name and class on back
2. Draw a slightly wavy line partway up from the bottom of the paper (foreground)
3. Draw a more hill-like line horizontally above the previous line.
4. Draw mountains in the background (demonstrate how to draw, otherwise you end up with triangles)

Using oil pastels:
5. Take a look at van Gogh's work, discussion with students about what they see/notice.
6. Using what students noticed, demonstrate how to use the oil pastels to create the same effect that van Gogh uses in his work. Incorporate vocab word 'movement'
7. Fill the foreground (bottom section) using yellow green, green, and yellow.
8. 2nd section gets filled using green, yellow green, and a bit of blue
9. Mountains get filled using green, blue, and a bit of violet.
10. Demonstrate how to create a sky full of movement. Have students choose a time of day and use those colors for their sky. Talk about movement, as the sky is full of movement and lines that create that movement.

OPTIONAL:
- trim 1/2 inch off of each side of the work
- have student sign and then mount their work to a colored piece of paper of their choosing.

Students assessed using the attached rubrics.
