High [9th-12th] Lesson Plan

Re-design a Fairy Tale

Created on August 03, 2013 by StephieArtTeacher

This lesson plan has students choosing a class fairy tale, or literary story, and thinking of it in a different way. They are to re-design the concept of the story. For example, instead of Alice in Wonderland being a Victorian fantasy world, they are all vampires. Or maybe Snow White is a steam punk warrior? The possibilities are endless and the end results are very fun!

1. Students will view a variety of class literature illustrations from several different stories. (I do this in a power point)
2. Students will choose from a list of fairy tales or classic literature stories (Make sure they are going off the story, not the movie, and write a list on the board) and they will tell teacher which story they chose.
3. They will then choose a concept to change the story around (Write out a list on board. Things like western, gothic, anime, vampire, dragon, steam punk, animals, zombies, etc)
4. After choosing a story and concept, students will figure out a recognizable picture to make as their art piece.

Students will be graded on their integrating elements of art and principles of design into their work.
Students will also be graded on the effectiveness of the artwork and being able to easily recognize what story they re-created. (I tell them I should be able to look at it and easily say "Ah, you did an animal Romeo and Juliet, or a Zombie Wizard of oz.")
Students are also graded on working diligently through the week and using their time effectively.

-Collect a variety of classic literature illustrations and create a power point as examples at the beginning of the lesson.

This project is very fun and the possibilities are endless. Students are always very creative with this one. Some may need a push for ideas who aren't naturally creative, but making lists of stories and concepts on the board really helps them out.
