Middle [6th-8th] Lesson Plan

Cartoon Skeletons

Created on August 06, 2013 by MsFoushee

This is the final project for my unit on body proportions with 7th graders. The learn the names of major bones and muscles (in conjunction with 7th grade science curriculum: body functions) and how they create the forms of the body. This is based on the work of artist Michael Paulus (I emailed him when I used his idea- he's cool with it!)

THE PLAN
SWBAT demonstrate knowledge of the skeletal system

1. images of cartoon characters (I found online coloring sheets and copy/pasted 2 per page, but you could also have students find their own or use coloring books)
2. Tracing paper (if cartoons are half-page, cut to half-page)
3. Ultra-fine tip Sharpies
4. White drawing paper (cut to half-page)
5. Paper clips or clothespins
6. Colored pencils
7. Black construction paper for mounting

1. Students choose a character. On drawing paper, redraw the character. Color with colored pencils with hard pressure so the colors are "cartoon bright." Outline with sharpie.
2. Clip tracing paper over the drawing. Trace the body outline LIGHTLY with pencil (this will be erased.)
3. Students use their knowledge of the body to fill the body shape outline with a skeleton in light pencil. There should be some kind of distortion, like a short ribcage, long foot bones, etc, that are appropriate for the character.
4. Trace the "keeper" lines of the skeleton with Sharpie. Gently erase the body outline and skeleton pencil lines.
5. Mount the skeleton over the colored pencil image on black paper. (I had one student who wanted them separate, so we mounted the skeleton over a second piece of white paper so it would show up.)
